Knowing the difference between "railroad" and "up the bolt" can save you money when buying fabric yardage! These terms dictate how the fabric is applied to an item and which direction the pattern runs. It can also mean the difference between having a seam over a long distance or not. Most fabrics come in a standard bolt width of 54"; however some come as wide as 120". If you are covering a wide width item and the fabric is 54" wide and a solid (no pattern), you can use less fabric by "railroading" it. Another great way to use "railroad" to your advantage, is if you have a striped fabric that is 120" wide and the pattern runs vertically "up the bolt" and you want them to appear horizontal when made into drapery panels, you can "railroad" the fabric.
